Thank you. This is why I never really pursued higher education although I want it so desperately. This is no way to run a country.

schools in the US aren’t even educational, they’re about indoctrination and “breaking” individual thought ( T_T) let’s not forget that part of the problem.

Treating schools as our default means to advancing education is as fundamentally wrong-headed as treating prisons as our default means to advancing justice. We need museums, libraries, parks, zoos, summer camps, universal internet access, and public funding for and access to the arts, among other things.

Of course, for any of that to be useful, we also need to make sure everyone has a full belly, a safe place to sleep, physical and mental healthcare, and spare time. And for that you need a robust social safety net, and you probably need significant wealth redistribution.

And no one with any power actually has any interest in making all that happen, so you get all of this crazy-ass bullshit like standardized testing and vague platitudes about “holding teachers accountable” which seems to carry the unstated conjunction “…for the systemic inequality of the society they were naive enough to try and make sustainable.” And it doesn’t work, because when you try to compartmentalize what are in fact broad societal problems (in this case, “fuck! people need to like, know things!”) within the aegis of a single building that everyone hates being in, and then you further isolate all “accountability” for the functioning of this impossible place within a single being, you get…

But you also get a bunch of people learning not much more than to be stressed and miserable all the time and to keep sustaining the charade that makes them stressed and miserable under the internalized threat of being made more stressed and miserable if they don’t play along. And a lot of those folk just end up in prison, and the folk responsible all pop open some ice cold diet cokes and laugh about it while watching their dancing horses.
